Reframing the Female Body Through Art
Hull-based artist Celina Kemp works across drawing, sculpture, and mixed media to examine the politics of the female body. Their practice is rooted in feminism, using art as a means to confront and disrupt the sexualisation of women within visual culture.

About the Artist :
Celina Kemp
I am an emerging Fine Art student and multidisciplinary artist based in Hull, working primarily with drawing and sculpture to explore feminist themes and reframe the way the female body is seen, portrayed, and understood. My practice centres on the belief that art can challenge dominant narratives and create new spaces for autonomy, dignity, and truth, especially for those whose bodies have historically been controlled, sexualised, or silenced.
My work begins with observation: of form, gesture, vulnerability, and strength. Through intuitive mark-making and tactile sculptural processes, I aim to strip away layers of social expectation that cling to the female body. I reimagine it not as something to be consumed, but as something to be listened to, something complex, human, and whole. Each piece, whether drawn or built, becomes a quiet act of resistance against oversexualisation and a celebration of selfhood beyond the male gaze.
I am continuously inspired by the conversations surrounding modern feminism, body politics, and the lived experiences of women. These narratives push my practice forward and allow me to approach my subject matter with both sensitivity and conviction. As I continue my studies in Fine Art, I am committed to developing a visual language that is honest, unapologetic, and firmly rooted in empowerment.
At the core of my practice is the understanding that desexualising the female form is not only an artistic pursuit, but a political responsibility. The ways women’s bodies are framed in visual culture shape how they are treated, valued, and understood in society. By deliberately challenging and dismantling the ingrained sexualisation of the female form, my work seeks to intervene in this visual legacy and offer alternative narratives rooted in autonomy and respect. I view art as a powerful platform for cultural change, a space where deeply embedded beliefs can be confronted and reimagined. Through my practice, I aim to contribute to a wider feminist movement that insists on representation that empowers rather than diminishes, and that recognises the political urgency of reclaiming the female body from objectification.
Hull’s creative community has shaped my growth as an artist, offering a landscape where history, identity, and resilience intersect. Working within this environment encourages me to take risks, to experiment with material and scale, and to embrace the uncertainties that come with being at the beginning of a lifelong artistic journey.
Ultimately, my goal is to create work that invites reflection and challenges the assumptions viewers bring with them. I want my practice to contribute to a wider dialogue about representation, one that prioritises authenticity over objectification, and humanity over stereotype. Through each piece, I hope to offer a new perspective on the female form: one that is grounded in respect, complexity, and empowerment.
Thank you for taking the time to engage with my work and the ideas that drive it.
